Description: | oil painting
A half length portrait of Thomas Duncan, Professor of Mathematics in the United College 1820-1858. He is shown in three-quarter view, sitting on a chair, wearing a black gown. One hand rests on the arm of the chair and an open book can be seen in the background on the right.
Fife Herald, 25 September 1856 notes that the portrait was by Mr Wilson: 'so well known amongst us'.
The University Calendar 1895 identifies the artist as James Wilson, 1856, according to Cant.
Cant notes that on the 1841 census, James Wilson, portrait painter, aged 33, is listed as a lodger at east end of Soth Street, possibly in St Mary's with Janet Henderson or Oman. Not Fife born, he adds.
However, another hand on Scott's catalogue card has identified the artist as William A. Wilson, fl. 1834-1865. | Publisher: | University of St Andrews | Rights holder: | 47795 | Subjects: | PORTRAIT MATHEMATICS painting | Temporal: | 1856/1856 | Source: | University of St Andrews | Creator: | WILSON, James | Identifier: | HC163 | Language: | en-GB |
