Description: | oil painting
A portrait of Reverend Robert Haldane, Professor of Mathematics in the United College 1807-1820 and Principal and Professor of Divinity of St. Mary's College, 1820-1854. He is shown wearing a black gown and standing before an open book on a stand.
There are two artists called James Caw: Sir James Lewis Caw HRSA (1864-1950), son-in law of William MacTaggart and James Caw (fl. 1839-1884), an Edinburgh based painter who exhibited regularly at the RSA, 1839-1884. Both painted portraits. Alison Scott believed the artist of this work was Sir James Lewis Caw and provided biographical information on him: this may simply have been because she was unaware of the other Caw. It seems more likely that James Caw is the artist of this work: he could have painted Haldane from life. | Publisher: | University of St Andrews | Rights holder: | 47795 | Subjects: | PORTRAIT MATHEMATICS PROFESSOR painting PRINCIPAL | Temporal: | 1820/1924 | Source: | University of St Andrews | Creator: | CAW, James L. | Identifier: | HC182 | Language: | en-GB |
