A portrait of Thomas Hay, Chancellor of the University of St Andrews from 1765-1787. Hay is shown in three-quarter view wearing the academic dress of the Chancellor, a black brocaded silk gown trimmed with gold lace. He is seated on a chair with gold arms, and behind it hangs a red swathe of fabric.
Portrait painter in oil and chalk, mezzotint and line engraver. Pupil and later chief assistant and copyist to Allan Ramsay, c1752-1760s.
