Description: | oil painting
A head and shoulders portrait of George Hill, Principal and Primarius Professor of Divinity of St Mary's College 1791-1819. He is shown wearing a dark gown which is difficult to distinguish from the very dark background.
Edinburgh, Scotland - Cant queries whether this is an early work by Sir John Watson Gordon.
Dates based on presumption that the portrait is by Gordon and was painted during Hill's lifetime.
Gordon modelled his early style on that of Raeburn. Gordon was one of the most prolific Scottish artists. He became President of the RSA in 1850. | Publisher: | University of St Andrews | Rights holder: | 47795 | Subjects: | BIBLICAL CRITICISM PORTRAIT MODERATOR DIVINITY GREEK PROFESSOR painting PRINCIPAL | Temporal: | 1804/1820 | Source: | University of St Andrews | Creator: | GORDON, John Watson | Identifier: | HC189 | Language: | en-GB |
