Description: | oil painting
A portrait of James Playfair, Principal of the United College 1799-1819. He is shown here wearing a black gown, resting his right hand against a globe.
Letter dated 25 August 1994 from Lucy Dixon, on file, notes: '...the portrait of James Playfair, D.D., painted by Martin and signed Martin PWP 1798. As Martin died in 1797, it would appear that the portrait was only just finished when the artist died and the signature was added by another person and, therefore, constitutes an inscription'.
Martin was a portrait painter in oil and chalk, and a mezzotint and line engraver. Pupil and later chief assistant and copyist to Allan Ramsay, c. 1752-1760s. First instructor of Raeburn and Limner to the Prince of Wales. | Publisher: | University of St Andrews | Rights holder: | 47795 | Subjects: | PORTRAIT VANDALISM painting PRINCIPAL | Temporal: | 1795/1797 | Source: | University of St Andrews | Creator: | MARTIN, David | Identifier: | HC216 | Language: | en-GB |
