A three-quarter length portrait of the Rt. Hon. Jan Christiaan Smuts, Rector of the University of St. Andrews, 1931-1934. He is shown standing in a study with his left hand resting on an open book and holding some papers in the other hand. Smuts wears the Rector's purple silk gown, faced and lined with maroon silk.

Mr Frank O. Salisbury, LL.D. offered to paint a portrait of Smuts, providing necessary sittings can be arranged. Will present it to the University in commemoration of General Smuts's period as Rector.
The work was exhibited at Glasgow Art Galleries Summer Exhibition in 1943 - see Court Minutes 22 June 1943, p. 109.
Salisbury was a painter of portraits, historical and ceremonial subjects.
