A portrait of John Steven Watson, Principal of the University, 1966-1986. He is shown sitting in a wooden chair, clasping the top of a wooden stick in one hand, the other hand resting on the arm of the chair. Watson wears the Principal's purple silk gown faced with purple velvet. In the background there is a desk with an image of St Salvator's Chapel propped up.
Glasgow, Scotland - Commissioned by the University Court in 1985; finished 1986.

Donaldson is a painter in oil and occasionally watercolour. Painter of portraits and landscape. He joined the staff at Glasgow School of Art in 1940 and became head of painting 1967-81.
