Description: | Sword, Double edged (a 'smallsword') Hilt of brass (originally gilt) One shell of the counterguard is slightly larger than the other, The 'arms of the hilt' are large and functional, the ends of the 'arms' fitting into the clefts between the shells, The knuckleguard, quillon block, the one short quillon and the 'arms of the hilt' are cast in one piece, Another small block which stiffens the counterguard and fits through it, appears to be a separate piece, The pommel and tang button are cast in one piece, Both ferrules are separate and of brass, The knuckleguard is comparatively straight and parallel with the grip, The grip is wound with silver wire of two sizes, a large size braided in 'vs', and the small one twisted in rope-like pattern, The knuckleguard swells in the middle and the upper end is enlarged as a stop, where it enters a hole in the pommel, Blade is a flat hexagonal for 5 l/2 - 6 inches from the hilt, then eliptical to the point, The edges of the blade taper at a steeper angle for about the length of the forte, then almost imperceptibly to a longer taper to the point, Two fullers extend to about 3 - 7/8 inches from the hilt, Probably a Solingen blade, The hilt and the blade appear to be contemporary and original,Probably a French sword, military and for lower grade company officers and/or NCOs
