"Oats were a staple food in Scotland from the Iron Age, their cultivation is suited to the colder, wetter climate which did not allow wheat to be grown. This wooden brose bowl, or bassie bowl, and ladle were for making brose, a popular dish, made with dehusked and ground oatmeal soaked in boiling water or milk. The bowl is turned from a single piece of wood, which allows it to hold hot liquids, and the ladle is also carved from a single piece of wood. The bowl is decorated with a double incised line running around it. The iron hoop is a repair to the bowl. They date from the late 18th to the 19th century."
