"Bronze ring headed pins were in use in Northern Britain over several centuries, from the Iron Age into the early medieval and Viking period, about 500-1000AD. The pin was probably used on loosely woven clothing and there would have been a thong attached from the ring to the tip of the pin, to keep it secure. This has lead to the suggestion that they are shroud pins. These two pins are plain with flattened shanks from halfway to the tip. The rings are attached to the pins by a flat loop at the head of the pin. The style of the pins suggests that they date from the 9th century AD. Similar pins have been recovered from Viking graves in the Western Isles. Pins of this type are very uncommon in mainland Scotland."
