"Washing Dolly, a type of agitator for laundry, late 19th cent."
Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Washing of clothes in NE Scotland was done by hand until the 20th century, but devices were developed that helped with this heavy task. This is an agitator, also known as a wash dolly. The bell is made of copper, and it has a wooden handle. The bell is double and there are holes around the rim which allow the water and suds to move through the clothes as the dolly is moved up and down in the washing water. The wash dolly was a normal part of the domestic equipment for a household in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one comes from Darnabo Farmhouse, Fyvie, Aberdeenshire."
