Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Snuff was a very popular way of using tobacco from the 17th century until Queen Victoria came to the throne (she disapproved of it). At first snuff mulls were made to hold the snuff, later, boxes were developed. Snuff mulls were conical or barrel-shaped containers with a lid on the top. They were made in many original and fancy designs and of many materials including horn, bone, ivory, wood and stone. This is a snuff mull made from a ram's horn. The horn has been worked to make it curl regularly and in a flat plane and it is thinned to a narrow point. It is trimmed with six silver bands with punched decoration of circles and hearts and finely-scalloped edges. It is also tipped with silver and the hinge and flower-like lid decoration are silver. This is an elegant snuff mull, with good quality silver bindings. It has the individuality often seen in snuff mulls, but is crafted in the traditional materials of horn and silver. It dates from the 18th-19th century and comes from NE Scotland."
