"One of a selection of snuff mulls (18th -early 19th cent)."
Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Snuff was a very popular way of using tobacco from the 17th century until Queen Victoria came to the throne (she disapproved of it). At first snuff mulls were made to hold the snuff. These were conical or barrel-shaped with a lid on the top. They were made in many original and fancy designs and of many materials such as horn, bone, ivory, wood and stone. This very large snuff mull is made from the horns of a large ram. The central box which holds the snuff has a silver lid, engraved with the initials 'PW' and a silver panel engraved with a thistle. Despite its extravagant outward appearance, the interior of mull is very roughly hewn. Snuff was expensive so this mull, outwardly, would have amply demonstrated the owner's prosperity. A similar mull is known to have been given to a Highland Regiment in the mid 19th century."
