"Tobacco was introduced into Britain in the 16th century and by the 18th century was popular either taken as snuff or smoked in a clay pipe. It was common for a person to have an ornate snuff or tobacco box and there are many different shapes. This round, brass tobacco box dates from 1755. It belonged to John Rinny and is inscribed with his name and the date. He was a member of the Hammermen's Guild, which was an influential organisation with members from many trades where a hammer was used, particularly goldsmiths and silversmiths. Possibly he was a silversmith. The inscription around the perimeter of the base is: 'BY HAMMER AND HAND ALL ARTS DO STAND'. The top of the box is decorated with the design of an incised, rayed sun and two relief stars. The stars may be a decorative way of rivetting the break in the lid. The tobacco box has a secret locking mechanism to open the lid."
