Description: | Letter weighing balance, in steel
"Letter scales (late 19th cent)."
Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"It was important that weights and measures could be correctly calculated and would compare from place to place. This small balance is for weighing letters before they were posted, so that the charge for them could be calculated. The balance dates from the 19th century and is made of steel. The letter would be pushed into the clip and suspended."
