"Shoe buckles, Aberdeenshire (17th -18th cent)."
Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Dress has always been decorative as well as practical and fastenings provide a vehicle for decoration. This is a shoe buckle dating from between 1720 and 1850. The buckle is one of a pair and would have been worn on a tongued shoe. This sort of shoe would have been for inside or town wear and the buckle could be transferred from shoe to shoe. The buckle mechanism is of iron, with a hinged double pin and keeper, the leather strap passing between them. The ornate part is of bronze, decorated with roses and leaves."
