"Until the mid-19th century, all cloth was made from wool or flax spun and woven in the home. In the 18th century, spinning wheels were introduced, capable of producing larger quantities of yarn wound onto a bobbin. Weaving was done on upright looms at an early period, and were superseded by horizontal looms by the second half of the 19th century. These allowed a wider web to be woven. This is a 'sweir kitty', a device that allows several bobbins of yarn to be used simultaneously. It was hung over the loom and the yarn could be wound off it by the weaver. It comes from Towie, Aberdeenshire."
