Description: | Gartane-leem with drawer, in wood. A small portable loom for weaving garters and cradle strings
"'Gartane leem' - a small portable loom used for weaving narrow bands of cloth, Aberdeenshire (early - mid 19th cent)."
Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Until the mid-19th century, all woollen clothing was made from wool spun and woven in the home. There were two types of domestic loom, a wide one producing cloth for plaids and clothing and the 'gartane leem' for narrow bands and stockings. This is a small, wooden, portable 'gartane leem' or garter loom, used to produce narrow lengths of woven material which were later seamed to make hose or stockings. The woven fabric was stored on the winding axle and the shed of the weaving could be changed by moving the slotted wooden plate up and down. This loom comes from Aberdeenshire. The products of these looms were often sold to supplement the family income."
