"The Jacobites were adherents of James VII of Scotland and his descendants, the Stuarts, believing that the British Throne should be theirs. Many momentoes and Jacobite insignia, such as this snuff mull, carried before the rebellions, were kept after this time by families. The dispute divided many families and eventually led to defeat at the Battle of Culloden and the subsequent suppression of the Highlands by the Hanoverians. This silver snuff mull with an ovoid, barrel-shaped body, is inscribed on the lid with a Jacobite rose surrounded by the owner's name, 'William Forbes of Blacktoun'. On the front is the coat of arms of the Forbes family with the three boars heads and the words 'UIR ESCO'. William Forbes declared himself a Jacobite at the 1715 rebellion."
