Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"The Jacobites were adherents of James VII of Scotland and his descendants, the Stuarts, believing that the British Throne should be theirs. The dispute divided many families and eventually led to defeat at the Battle of Culloden and the subsequent suppression of the Highlands by the Hanoverians. Jacobite and Hanoverian insignia were kept at this time by families and supporters of the two factions. This is a silver toddy ladle with a fine, turned, wooden handle. The bowl is round with an everted lip, with the rim decorated with a foliate design. A silver threepenny piece of George II is set into the base, so the user would know the Hanoverian affiliation of the owner. The head on the coin is visible to the user as he empties it, thus revealing the affiliation of the owner. The coin is inscribed: 'GEORGIVS II DEI GRATIA'. There is a foliate design around the rim."
