"Forbes (1585-1634) was 4th Principal of Marischal College (1620) where he had been Professor of Logic in 1601. Forbes was one of the renown intellectual circle of the north-east the 'Aberdeen Doctors'. An Episcopalian he was appointed Bishop of Edinburgh by Charles I in 1633. In the nineteenth century the portrait was attributed to George Jamesone. That attribution cannot be sustained."
