"James Fraser was one of the Frasers of Farraline (near Inverness). He left Inverness Grammar School (the predecessor of Inverness Royal Academy) in 1660 at the age of 15, and took the degree of M.A. at King's College in 1664. He became tutor to the Duke of St Albans (son of Charles II), before being appointed the first Secretary to Chelsea Hospital, a post he held for 30 years. He was also librarian of the Royal Library and Licenser of Printing, and in the process appears to have become quite rich. He died in 1731 and is buried in St Martin's in the Fields in London. He was a major benefactor to King's College and also to the Session Library in Inverness. He endowed two bursaries (in philosophy and theology - linked with the post of Librarian) for pupils of Inverness Grammar School to attend King's College. For further information see: P.J. Anderson: The Grammar School and Royal Academy of Inverness (Inverness, 1907)."

"James Fraser, Secretary of Chelsea Hospital, was a major benefactor of King's College, presenting books and providing funds for the construction of a library. The portrait was painted in London as a commission for King's College but was subsequently paid for by Fraser himself."
