"Geddes (1828-1900) was appointed 3rd Principal of the University of Aberdeen in 1885 having been Professor of Greek since 1855. George Reid, (1841-1913) trained in Edinburgh, in Holland studying with G.A. Mollinger and J. Israels, and in Paris. Initially a landscape painter he increasingly worked as a portraitist. He is closely associated with John Forbes White, the Aberdeen patron and collector. Geddes was a close friend of both Reid and White. The portrait was presented to the University by Reid."
