"Rennet (1828-1905) was an influential and enormously popular extra mural teacher of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy associated with Aberdeen University. He was awarded a degree of LL.D in 1885. The portrait was paid for by subscription from Rennet's former students. George Reid, (1841-1913) trained in Edinburgh, in Holland studying with G.A. Mollinger and J. Israels, and in Paris. Initially a landscape painter he increasingly worked as a portraitist. He is closely associated with John Forbes White, the Aberdeen patron and collector."
