Description: | Black and white engraving, full-length portrait of John Smith, seated, with Marischal College in the background. Sheets of paper on the floor suggest he may have been an architect involved in the construction of Marischal College. From an original painting by John Phillip.
"Portrait of John Smith, architect along with Archibald Simpson of the rebuilding work at Marischal College between 1836 and 1845. John Phillip (1817-67) was a native of Aberdeenshire and trained in London. Although he painted a number of portraits he is better known as a subject painter. His earlier work is rather in the manner of David Wilkie's early rural genre. Later following numerous trips to Spain and the renown achieved of the subsequent Spanish subjects he acquired the sobriquet 'Spanish Phillip.' Joseph Epenetus Coombs (fl.1832-38) was a little known engraver."
