Author: Inglis,Jim & Curtis,Neil Date: 1990 Purpose: Encyclopaedia of the North-East
"Until the mid-19th century all clothing was made from wool or flax spun and woven in the home. The earliest method of spinning was on a drop spindle, rotated by the fingers; later, in the 18th century, spinning wheels were introduced, usually and capable of producing larger quantities of yarn. A spinning wheel would have been an important part of the furniture of the house, often kept near the hearth, and used for spinning both wool and flax. This is a cocked-up spinning wheel, a Saxony upright, with the spindle and bobbin winder mounted above the wheel and powered by a treadle. This type of spinning wheel was introduced to flax spinners in NE Scotland when linen production increased to an industrial scale in the later 18th century. The treadle enables larger quantites of yarn to be spun. It comes from Corgarff, Aberdeenshire."
