Description: | 1. Barrel: The steel smoothbore barrel is octagonal. There is a sliding (spring loaded) catch over the breech that releases the triangular bayonet. The steel rammer is attached to the muzzle by means of a swivel. 2. Lock: The lock plate, swan-necked cock (with flint and leather) and frizzen are steel. The lock plate is engraved with maker mark "Ryan & Watson". 3. Stock: The butt and fore grip are made from walnut. The butt is carved with a cross-hatched pattern and does not have a butt cap. The trigger guard is iron. The end cap is made of horn., From old card index - 'One flint lock pistol, made by Ryan and Watson. Early 19 c.' Overall length; 38 cms. 25 in. Bore; 17mm, 21/32. Barrel; Octangonal barrel, overall length; 24 cms. Two Ordnance proof marks on left hand side of barrel, all metal parts rusted. Tang is lightly engraved and had catch for spring bayonet on it. Muzzle has two attachments on top for spring bayonet. Lock; Iron lock plate has small amount of engraving (leaf) on triangular section of lock on butt end. The rest is line engraved and bears the name Ryan and Watson. Cock body has line and leaf engraving and top screw has flat head. Frizzen is line engraved and has a roller bearing on spring. Stock and furniture; walnut full stock ending in horn cap 2.5 cms from muzzle. Wide cross hatching on grip, there bing no butt plate. Iron mounts include trigger guard engraved with trophies of arms at the bottom of the guard and a stylised pineapple front finial, line engraved; octagonal escutcheon behind barrel tang; single screw securing lock to stock (no side plate) and engraved ramrod pipe. Swivel ramrod (iron) has brass cap at breech end and is 23.5 cms long with button end at muzzle. Spring triangular bayonet has single flute at top, is 21.5 cms long with 18 cm blade and spring is broken. All the screws have engraved heads.', Old card index states that the specimen was given by Miss L.J.Hurt, 12 Burn Street, Nottingham.'
