Description: | Scabbard is NCM 1993-584/(B).
Hilt of walrus ivory and Jaipur enamel. Persian blade of fine Damascus steel with inscription inlaid in gold.
Indian sword. Curved single-edged Persian blade of watered steel with relief floral design on both sides near the hilt. Gold inlay inscriptions on sides and back of the blade, some worn.
Jaipur enamel hilt. Grip scales of walrus ivory. Pommel in the shape of a mythical monster enamelled deep blue, damaged. The cross guard is enamelled with a peacock in the centre, two ducks at the sides in deep blue, and leaves in green. Reverse of the cross guard has five flowers also enamelled in deep blue.
Inscriptions: four in Arabic. On the side with flowers on the cross guard: (Hussain - Hassn - Fatima). These names represent the spiritual order of the Shi'te Muslims: Fatima, the daughter of the prophet and mother of the twin brothers Hassan and Hussain, who are the sons of Ali. On the reverse and directly below the cross guard: (Allah and Mohammed and Ali). Just above the relief design a smaller inscription says (made by.... ..Isfahany ), the maker's name worn away and the surname barely recognisable. On the back is a verse from the Holy Quran, from Surat Alnasr (Victory), which says, (When comes the help of Allah, and victory, and thou dost see the people enter Allah's religion in crowds, celebrate the praises of thy lord, and pray for his forgiveness: for He is oft returning in grace and mercy}. Another inscription at the end says (by the will of God). Scabbard of wood covered with relief decorated gilt leather, much deteriorated, exposing the wood and the technique used for the underlaid design of string and adhesive. Two semi-circular lockets and chape, ensuite with the hilt with birds enamelled in blue on silver-gilt, and floral designs on the reverse.
