Description: | Indian sword (talwar) with fine Persian blade inscribed with maker's name.
Blade curved and thin, of watered steel with patches of rust. Sword cuts near the point. Spurious signature in gold inlayed cartouche: (The work of Assad-Allah al-Isfahani 1852), surprisingly dated by the Gregorian year, not the Islamic Hijra year.
Hilt: walrus ivory grip scales; broken at the pommel, with an old repair; also broken (all parts present?) strap joining the hilt. The cross-guard silver and Jaipur enamel of floral designs in different colours. Ram's head quillons enamelled in blue.
Scabbard of wood covered with deep red velvet. Silver chape and two lockets finely decorated with floral designs in Jaipur enamel. Lockets semi-circular with flat mounts. Scabbard mouth split by continuous insertion of the sword into the scabbard, cutting the velvet covering and the strings underneath. Old paper sticker on the chape: T in black ink.
