Description: | Short steel-bladed sword with inscriptions etched and incised in Arabic. The sharply pointed blade with parallel sides has a short groove down the centre of one side and a long one on the reverse. Incised spiral floral design with a star at the top of the blade. The hilt of dark brown horn scales with three rivets: two projecting circular steel rivets, and a cross shape on top of them. Leather covered wooden scabbard. At the top, 8 leather straps have been tied together. Small steel chape held by a wire and covered by some scraps of leather. Old number in white ink (S...5).
Inscriptions etched and incised on the blade: the upper inscription on the side where the accession number has been marked says (Victory from God and a forthcoming conquest). The inscription in the centre of the blade says (Victory is only from God). On the reverse of the blade, top centre, is (by the name of God, with the wish of God). Underneath is (made in 1205 H- 1791 AD). At the top of the blade near the hilt is engraved (There is no young man but Ali and there is no sword but Thulfakhar). Some spelling mistakes. Above, is a smaller incised inscription: (The servant ...of Allah, Ali. Year 1205). This is a common phrase usually written by the maker or craftsman. I believe the worn word is `poor` i.e.. (The poor servant of Allah, Ali}.
