Description: | "of Lord Howard of Effingham, Earl of Nottingham, Knight of the Garter and Lord High Admiral of England, commander of the fleet which destroyed the Spanish Armada. It was painted about 1620, when the Admiral was an old man, by a follower of Daniel Mytens (c. 1590-1642) (the head and hands are certainly by Mytens himself) and is a studio replica of the portrait in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, which was painted throughout by Daniel Mytens." [Annual Report for year ended 1/3/1953]
Subject whole length standing in a carpeted interior 3/4 profile to right, holding a white wand of office and wearing Garter Robes (red surcoat, cloak fastened by tasselled cords, Garter, Garter chain and George pendant badge) over a pale grey satin costume; left hand resting on sword pommel; to right the Garter white-plumed hat on a table covered with a Turkey carpet; a distant view of a sea battle from window behind.
