Description: | In the top left hand corner of the picture, in the background, is a cliff-top chateau with round towers; to the right and below it is a sheer cliff face that drops to the sea.
In the foreground on the left are two women, a girl and another child, all dressed in traditional Normandy dress. The woman standing facing the girl is wearing a white lace bonnet with lappets and a red three-quarter length cloak over a dark dress. She carries a basket. The girl wears a dark bonnet and dress. Next to them sits a figure, possibly a boy, wearing a blue cap, and a light shirt. Next to the figures is a basket (or barrel?) lying on its side.
Watching this group is a seated woman leaning on a tall basket. She is dressed in a white bonnet, a white blouse with the sleeves rolled up, a red and blue bodice, light coloured skirt and clogs. Behind her is a white horse with a saddle that has wooden attachments at the front and back, and a pole on the left side carrying a basket.
In the extreme foreground on the left is a strange object, like a barrel with a pole right through either end. ("There must be a proper phrase for this".) In the foreground on the right are large rocks.
The right hand side of the picture is taken up by the sea-shore. A woman, dressed in the same way as the others, leaves the shore carrying a large basket on her back. There are figures behind her in the distance going to or from a large moored sailing ship, and there is another vessel in the distance. A large expanse of sky stretches above the picture.
