Colour-tinted postcard of Leeds Parish Church, St. Peter's, situated on Kirkgate. This is a rear view seen from the south. A church is believed to have existed on the site since at least Saxon times in the 8th-9th centuries. This was replaced by a Norman church which was damaged by fire around 1500. A new church was built which lasted until 1838. When Dr. Walter Hook became Vicar of Leeds in 1837 he planned alterations but finding the church in need of major repairs decided to rebuild the whole church, apart from the south wall which had been rebuilt in 1809-12. The new church, as seen here, was designed by architect Robert Chantrell who had a practice on Park Row. | License: | http://www.leodis.net/article.aspx?id=12 | Rights holder: | Leeds Central Library | Subjects: | Leeds Parish Church St. Peter's Church | Source: | Leodis - A photographic archive of Leeds | Identifier: | http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?id=20... | Go to resource |
