Area of stone scatter visible and some slight undulations but difficult to see any particular features.{2}
This scheduling includes the buried remains and associated archaeological deposits of Silkby Chapel, a stone chapel constructed in the medieval period in association with the former hamlet of Silkby. During the post medieval period, following the depopulation of the hamlet, the chapel went out of ecclesiastical use and was converted into an agricultural building. It was finally demolished in the 19th century. A raised building platform survives and fragments of building material are visible in the topsoil and the nearby hedge bank. The appearance of the building is known from documentary sources. {4}
Architectural fragments from the chapel have been used in a nearby rockery, and fragments of building stone were visible in the adjacent bank and hedge. A small, rough mound in the pasture marks the site of the chapel. {5}
Fragments of carved stone from the chapel including a late Perpendicular doorway were re-used in a nearby house which has now been demolished. Some stones from the chapel were also possibly re-used as a bridge at Broadwater. {7} | Subjects: | General Archaeology | Temporal: | 1066 - 1539 | Source: | Lincolnshire County Council | Identifier: | http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/Re... | Go to resource |
