Description: | PRN 37261
[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.]
This house was originally part of a single house with no. 5 (PRN 37819). The house itself dates from the 17th century and it has a heavily altered rear range which dates to the 16th century. The two storey rear range includes the remains of a hall which was originally open to the roof. A floor was inserted into this hall around 1600. The roof and two windows survive from the original hall. This range was originally a separate building which was bought and added to the main house in 1720. The two storey bay window on the street front of the main house was one of the improvements made by John Wyche between 1774 and 1781 (he was fined in 1783 for the encroachment of the bay window onto the street). The panelling in the main room of the house also dates to this period. A ground floor room in the rear wing of the house contains early 17th century panelling which probably once included a frieze. This room also has a corner fireplace with a 17th century overmantel and mid 18th century surround. A staircase in the rear wing dates to around 1700. {1}
This two storey house dates from the 17th and mid 18th centuries [this is not completely correct - see above], and is constructed of coursed rubble with a slate roof shared with no. 5.
