Description: | Nothing seen during recording of history of the site. APs show further rectangular enclosures within outer moat, quite distinct from, and later than traces of other relief or cropmarks which extend widely over whole area and are reminiscent of Roman settlement sites to W see TF12NE 1-5. An extensive Manorial site comprising basically an inner & outer moat. Local research failed to locate any literary references. Published survey (25') revised. At TF195270 - Site of New Hall, grange of Spalding Priory, built by Prior William of Littleport (1274-94). Also New Place. First reference 1229-53 - 'grant of 1 acre 2 perches of land of offoldfal in Toledyke in 1229-53 describes it butting E on small drove going through the portas novi locias far as Humelochrine and west on the marsh-dyke going towards Donuehirne. {8}{4}{5}{6}{7} IT IS LOCATED ALONGSIDE THE MEDIEVAL NEWDYKE, NOW KNOWN AS BECK BANK, ON MARINE SILTS WHICH WERE PROBABLY TAKEN IN FROM THE FEN IN THE EARLY C12. THE MOATED SITE IS SUB-RECTANGULAR IN PLAN AND HAS MAXIMUM OVERALL DIMENSIONS OF APPROXIMATELY 300 M EW BY 293 M NS. A RHOMBOIDAL CENTRAL ISLAND WITH INTERNAL DIMENSIONS OF APPROXIMATELY 155 M EW BY 93 M NS IS SURROUNDED BY AN INNER AND OUTER MOAT, SPACED BETWEEN 23 M AND 80 M APART, WITH A NUMBER OF DITCHED ENCLOSURES BETWEEN. EXCLUDED FROM THE SCHEDULING ARE ALL FIELD BOUNDARY FENCES AND GATES WITHIN THE AREA, AS ARE DERELICT FARM BUILDINGS ON THE SOUTHERN EDAGE OF THE SITE, AND A WATER TROUGH, WITH CONCRETE STANDING AND SUPPLY PIPE, ALTHOUGH THE GROUND BENEATH ALL THESE FEATURES IS INCLUDED.
