The unlocated site of the alleged deserted village of East Firsby is apparently not separately documented before the 19th century. A separate township is nevertheless defined by a tithe award of 1839 complementing that of West Firsby. If a medieval settlement existed it may have been no more than a hamlet or farm. Its suggested location at Middle Farm ('Low Firsby' in 1830), TF00758545, now 'Manor Farm', is perhaps less likely than a site at 'The Grange', TF022857, shown as 'East Firsby' on the 1824 first edition 1 inch Ordnance Survey map. The latter, though lower lying and on the edge of the valley alluvium, is very similar in situation to that of Cold Hanworth to the south, and it lay within a block of fields whose names on the tithe award (all 'East Field') may indicate earlier arable; whereas those around Middle Farm ('West Hills', 'Bracken Hills', 'Great' and 'Little Furze Close') appear to indicate more marginal land use. No earthworks survive. {1}{2}{3} | Subjects: | General Archaeology | Temporal: | 1066 - 1539 | Source: | Lincolnshire County Council | Identifier: | http://www.lincstothepast.com/Records/Re... | Go to resource |
