Description: | The Poet Robert Burns was born in Alloway on 25th. January 1759 in a small two roomed thatched cottage built by his father William Burnes on a 7-acre smallholding acquired while working as a gardener for the landowner of the Doonholm estate around 1756.
At the time of this picture the Cottage was in the hands of the Incorporated Shoemakers of Ayr and was being used as an ale-house. The scene shown however assumes the date to be around 1759 before the Burns family left the Cottage.
This framed engraving is from the painting of the interior of the birthplace of Burns by D.O. Hill which shows the poets father William Burnes seated at the fire with his wife Agnes standing behind. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 | Publisher: | Burns Monument Trust | Temporal: | 1829-01-01 - 1829-12-31 | Source: | Burns Scotland | Identifier: | Framed engraving of interior of the Kitc | Go to resource |
