Description: | The Poet Robert Burns as a child in Alloway was taught by a young Ayr man named John Murdoch. He taught Burns and his brothers and sisters at Alloway and afterwards when they moved to the farm at Mount Oliphant, 2 miles away.
For a period from 1773 Murdoch was English Master at Ayr Grammar School and left under a cloud while speaking out against a local minister whilst he was intoxicated. He went to London and became a teacher of French. He died there in extreme poverty.
The engraving depicts the Ayr home of John Murdoch (1747-1824). It was situated at 58 Sandgate, Ayr next to the Free Church. While at school in Ayr for a short period Burns lodged here with his tutor. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 | Publisher: | Burns Monument Trust | Temporal: | 01/01/1906 - 12/06/1990 | Source: | Burns Scotland | Identifier: | Framed etching of John Murdoch's house i | Go to resource |
