Description: | Robert Burns (1759-96) Scotland's National Poet composed 'Tam O' Shanter ', his epic poem and arguably his best. It relates the tale of the drunken farmer coming home on his horse from the public house in Ayr. On passing the ruined Kirk Alloway he disturbs a witches party and is chased by them over a bridge.
The hand guard is on display in the Burns Cottage Museum in Alloway where the original manuscript of 'Tam O'Shanter' is also on view.
'Souter Johnie' was the drinking companion of 'Tam O'Shanter' and was based on a acquaintance of the Poet. John Davidson (1728-1806) was a shoemaker and was the prototype for the character in the poem. On display is a leather hand guard that belonged to him. He resided at Glenfoot of Ardlochan, near Maidens and often visited the market in Ayr. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 | Publisher: | Burns Monument Trust | Temporal: | 1770-01-01 - 1799-12-31 | Source: | Burns Scotland | Identifier: | Leather hand guard used by John Davidson | Go to resource |
