Description: | This painting, which hangs in Robert Burn's last home in Burns Street, Dumfries depicts the interior of a county schoolroom in Alloway, Ayrshire with a young Robert Burns reading to John Murdoch, his first teacher.
It was painted to celebrate the centenary of Robert Burns' birth in 1856 by George Washington Brownlow RSA.
John Murdoch was engaged by William Burnes, Burns' father, and some of his neighbours in and around the village of Alloway, as tutor to their children.
