Description: | Burns has copied the two verses of this poem titled 'Tho cruel fate' into the page numbered 19 in this folder containing the Jolly Beggars. It would seem pages 17 & 18 have been removed. The poem is a short two verse reflection on the consequences of his planned emigration to Jamaica. (poem no 123)
Robert Burns had met up with Jean Armour the previous year and early in 1786 had proposed marriage to her to which she had agreed. However her Father would have none of it in spite of her pregnancy. He then issued a writ on Burns for support which he was obliged to go into hiding to avoid.
A short love poem which Burns wrote about his pending embarkation across the Atlantic ocean to Jamaica and his concern at leaving Jean Armour whom he had hoped to marry. | License: | http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0 | Publisher: | Burns Monument Trust | Temporal: | 1786-01-01 - 1786-12-31 | Source: | Burns Scotland | Identifier: | Poem by Robert Burns: 'Tho cruel fate' | Go to resource |
