Description: | Robert Burns (1759-96) Scotland's National Poet was born in a small thatched cottage in Alloway, Ayrshire the son of a marker gardener who feued 7 acres locally. During a short period the farmer poet wrote a wealth of songs and poems. He died in Dumfries of heart disease aged only 37 years.
The snuff box is displayed in Burns Cottage Museum, Alloway. There is a small inscribed plate indicating that it was presented to J.C. Burns by a Miss Haugh.
The small snuff is made of wood with a speckled brown covering. It belonged to James Glencairn Burns ((1794-1865) the third surviving son of the Poet. He spent many years in India in the East India Company's service and rose to become a Lt. Colonel.
