Description: | A complete copper alloy 13th century impersonal seal matrix. The die of the seal, which is in poor condition, is circular in plan with a diameter of 19.92mm. Within a border is the negative inscription + S' AV MAR [ ] that runs around the central image of the die. This probably relates to a standard inscription beginning AVE MARIA. The central image is badly damaged, but it is possible to make out, in an impression, a figure seated on a throne, with a child to the left and a cross in a circle above the left shoulder. This is probably the Madonna and child. The shaft of the seal matrix is conical, six sided and terminates in a quatrefoil shaped loop, directly below which is an hexagonal collar that mirrors the six sides of the shaft. The overall length of the matrix is 29.38mm and it weighs 10.95g. The surface of the seal matrix is heavily abraded with an overall patina of dark green. For a similar seal matrix with Virgin motif see Saunders, 1991, Salisbury & South Wiltshire Medieval Catalogue part 1, figure 7, number 17.
