Description: | A copper-alloy 14th century medieval seal matrix of 'chess piece' or conical type, measuring 24mm in height with a circular die measuring c18mm in diameter. There is a trefoil suspension loop with a circular hole through its centre. Where the loop joins the shaft there is a transverse moulding. The shaft has a hexagonal cross-section. The die has a central cockerel or hen in profile walking left. Around this there is a border inscription which begins with a six-pointed star initial mark and reads CROV ME DAI. This appears to be English, and means 'Crow me day' or 'I crow at daybreak'. It is therefore likely to be a crowing cockerel depicted in the centre of the die rather than a hen. Compare the very similar SOMDOR152. | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
