Description: | A complete copper-alloy seal matrix of 'chess pawn' type and circa 14th century date. Measuring 18mm in height this matrix has a worn lozenge shaped suspension loop with a circular pierced hole through its centre. The shaft is facted and hexagonal in cross-section, it flares into the circular die which measures c17mm in diameter. This die has a squirrel in its centre and a border inscription. This inscription does not make sense as it read III VES V it may be that it was badly inscribed/ copied possibly by an illiterate individual and the original meaning is therefore unknown. | Publisher: | http://finds.org.uk | Source: | Portable Antiquities | Identifier: | http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/r... | Go to resource |
