Description: | Complete copper alloy Late Iron Age or Early Roman Nauheim Derivative bow brooch dating from the begining of the first century AD to c. AD 80. Overall length 41mm, maximum width, across the spring 10mm and 1.8mm thick. Weight 3.57g.The brooch is made from one piece of metal and comprises a bi-lateral spring which is circular in cross-section, about 1.0mm in diameter and consists of four turns. The outer turns project downwards to form an internal chord. The bow is flat with a maximum thickness of 1.8mm and when viewed from the side, it is straight rather than being curved. In plan, it is triangular in shape, being 33mm in length and 6.2mm in width at the upper part where it joins the spring. The catch-plate is rectangular, as viewed from the side and is 11mm in length, 5.3mm in width and a thickness of 0.4mm. It forms an angle with the bow which is slightly more than a right angle. It is slightly re-curved at the end in order to accommodate the pin. Viewing the reverse, the inner turn on the right side evolves to form the pin which is circular in cross-section and tapers to a sharp point. The pin is slightly bent from its original alignment. On the front of the bow, just above the junction with the catch-plate, is a small horizontal groove. Along each side of the bow is a lengthwise linear groove, which due to corrosion, is barely visible. The brooch is corroded. However, tiny areas of a mid-green patina have survived.
