Description: | An impersonal Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is a pyramid type, made from cast copper alloy and then it has been engraved. In plan the matrix base is circular. The reverse of the matrix has a hexagonal sectioned stem which terminates with a small moulded trefoil loop. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The legend reads 'CROV ME DAI[Y?]' which is probably translated as 'Crow me day', possibly a Medieval joke. The device is a cockerel within a beaded border. The matrix measures 28.02mm long, and 18.36mm diameter. It weighs 9.87g. The surface of the matrix has a well developed dark green patina. The matrix has been recently coated with a clear substance. The seal matrix dates to the Medieval period, probably 14th centuries. After c. 1300 smaller impersonal circular based seal matrices become more common (Harvey, P.D.A. and McGuinness, A. 1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals British Library and Public Record Office, p. 88-89).
