Description: | Silver penny of Edward I which has been gilded and made into a brooch. A Class 1c penny of 1279. The reverse is gilded and the obverse has a hook piece soldered to it (following the line if the long cross on the reverse). The hook is made from a trapezoidal sectioned strip of silver. At one end it is bent over to form a loop (possibly for attachment) and at the other it is bent backwards to form a hook. The end of the hook tapers slightly before a break at the end. The coin is in good condition and was probably converted to a dress accessory quite soon after it was minted. Potential treasure. Date: Medieval, post 1279 to around 1300 Diameter: 19.24 Weitght: 1.90 gUrchfont, Wiltshire, find (2008 T128)I have examined an object found at Urchfont, Wiltshire, in January 2008. It is a silver penny of King Edward I, class 1d (May to December 1279), mint of London, converted into a brooch or clothing hook by the addition of a pin to one side (its current weight with the attachment is 1.9g). This is a well-established class of object for England in the late 13th and early 14th century, featuring the utilisation of pennies and larger groats of Edward I and gros tournois of the French kings of the period and of similar coins of neighbouring rulers in the Low Countries. The distinctive feature of these converted coins is that the side left on view is always the design with the prominent cross element, which is normally also gilded. The silver content of the coin will be high - certainly over 90% fine (the sterling standard of the English coinage is normally assessed at 92.5% fine), without taking the gilding into account. Although single coins are not usually considered as Treasure, it is normal for coins converted into jewellery to be eligible for this. I would therefore regard this find as fulfilling the criteria of Treasure according to the terms of the Act.Dr Barrie J. Cook
