Description: | A Modern cast bronze Medallion of the German archaeologist Gerhard Berzu. On the obverse is Head of Berzu facing left, with the engravers initials 'EO 54' (line drawn through the O that I can't find on this font). On the reverse is the inscription GERHARD/ BERZU/ ZUM 65 GEBURSTAG/ VON SEINEN/ FREUDEN. The medal was presented to Gerhard Berzu, the eminent German archaeologist, on his 65 birthday. Berzu (1889 - 1964) came to England in 1935, having been sacked by the Nazis. While in England he carried out important excavations, in particular, the Iron Age settlement at Little Woodbury. When the war came and he and his wife were interned on the Isle of Man. They didn't waste their time there and spent the war excavating on the island. Berzu was the first German to fly in a powered aircraft.
